I

Few company’s can pull the old heart strings like Nintendo can. I have a deep attachment to Mario and Luigi, Samus, Link and Zelda. Their characters from my childhood that keep coming along with me as I grow older, speaking to my inner child with wide eye’d wonderment as they once did back in the 80′s.

When Nintendo announced their new console, the Wii, I like every other Nintendo fanboy was gitty with delight and intrigued by what was to come. Than, the announcement came that kinda threw me for a loop. Zelda: The Twilight Princess was to be delayed AGAIN, but would be available on the Wii. Now, as much as the Wii sounded cool, I was scared. Yes. I admit it. I was. What if, by some long shot, Nintendo royally fucked up my beloved Zelda franchise. I mean, I’ve become quite accustomed to controlling it with a regular controller. But the big N said that Zelda would also be released on the Gamecube, just at a later date. Now, my friend George kept telling me not to worry, it will OWN on the Wii. But, alas, I was still worried. I wanted to stick to my safety net of a regular controller with Zelda. Besides, it wasn’t looking like I’d be able to land a Wii before ’07 anyways. George kept insisting for me NOT to get the GC version, that the Wii version will be amazing.

Here it is: I was wrong. George was 100% right.

After landing my Wii last week and getting it home, the first thing I did was pop in that beautiful Zelda disk. And to my suprise the game controls amazingly! Dare I say, it will be hard to play Zelda using a regular controller again. I don’t know why I doubted George’s praises (he did get hands on at E3). I don’t know why I doubted Nintendo’s ability to make it work but I am so glad they did. Little stuff here is whats nice. I thought having to actually swing the remote would get boring, or even maybe lose precision. WRONG! Not tiring at all and the different moves mapped to different movements with the controller is a nice touch. One little thing I noticed that you could never do in previous Zelda’s was swing your sword while running. Well, kiss that goodbye because you CAN! So no more having to step to grass, cut, move to another patch, cut. Nope, you can be a lawnmower machine now, run and swing! hahaha. There are alot of other cool things, but I won’t spoil it for ya ;)

So far, I’m only 6hrs into the game and I just finally beat my first Temple. It’s been a great experience so far. I’m dying to play it each day but I’m also holding out, not wanting to rush, to savor my time in Hyrule. But with 70hrs of gameplay, I guess I can afford not to be TO stingy. So, if you get a chance at a Wii, do pick up Zelda. It’s a great game thus far! So, thanks George for kickin my ass to get the Wii version ;) haha
